She is out front, way out front. Despite her youth and, when I met her at least, inexperience in the world, she has always been out front. I suspect the same is generally true all around.
I don’t mean to minimize a man’s own role. I, for example, am the true head of the family in some important respects. When a veto or course correction is necessary, for example, I can generally make it stick. Larger questions—what kind of people we want to be, how to approach raising our girls, ethical dilemmas that arise, and the like—are largely my province, too.
But I wouldn’t have much grist to grind, nor would most of my friends—according to their reports—if she were not out front.
I don’t know if, behind every great woman there’s a great man. I’m not ready to go that far. But I am certain that, as long as my woman thinks so, I’m going to be okay.
