The Legacy Discovery Season Preview

This Fall 2024, there are four Legacy Discovery Weekends (LD) taking place across the continent: Atlanta, California, Calgary and Ontario (Toronto).

It’s been a number of years since the organization has been able to generate this kind energy. With the excitement of our online Zoom division Atlas having men across all geography, and the Membership Training Program helping to drive members into the weekend, many of the LD’s are set up for success.

Is that enough though? In the first 15-20 years of MDI, the enrollment and success of any Legacy Discovery was largely baked into the work of our membership. It was done in the trenches, in garages, at workplaces and family gatherings. Sometimes enrollment took weeks, sometimes years. I know from speaking with Division Coordinator Cary Lavine (North Star – Toronto), it took about 18 years of conversations and passion to convince his best friend to finally attend in 2022.

So, what’s the purpose of this article? Well, Mentor Discover Inspire is a much different organization than it was 10 years ago even. New members come from online searches and social media and group ads. Teams meet online and virtually; in some cases members have never met face to face. However, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the quality, experience and results of the Legacy Discovery Weekend. In fact, it’s gotten better.

WIth time, we have consolidated exercises, tightened curriculums and shared exercises and outcomes between the regions. What happens in Atlanta now happens in Toronto. What Toronto does well, so does Calgary. California shares its best with all of us and so on.

Knowing all this, and having better LD outcomes, improved training and competencies, more reach online and in social, and an already existing database of members (eager to attend), why is it that our Legacy Discovery attendance hasn’t skyrocketed, or at least seen big growth in cycle over cycle? The answer is a bit of a juxtaposition. As it turns out, the causal effect of bringing in new men, having churn and turnover has diluted some of the strengths the organization was once great at. Namely, the Art of Relationship. The skill we cultivated was being able to see into a man that could use a Legacy Discovery to jump start their life, or solve some immediate issues or help raise them from good to great.

When an LD cycle would start, we would pass around the paper forms, maybe email the PDF version for printing, and take pride in having a one-on-one with a man in our life (albeit sometimes a little nervous). The conversations could be difficult, and other times smooth. We would share our LD experiences and the impact it had on us. And often, by the time we finished our share, we would have a tear in our eye – mostly as a grateful memory of the impact and difference it made in our own lives. The participant (our friend or stranger) would listen intently, and we could see the impact our personal share made on them. They wanted that same access; the ability to be free, self expressed and feel so much more like the man they want to be.

The Purpose of the Legacy Discovery: To connect YOU to YOUR masculine identity through the wisdom of Men, and with that power put your Legacy into action.

Of the 20+ men I’ve enrolled personally in the last 10 years, many were leads who found us or I was asked to help enroll them. Half were men in my own life in some way. I remember two significant pillars in those relationships:

  • The day the man signed the form, and took the leap of faith. That is the day the man’s weekend and transformation began. I still see the signatures from the ink pen in my mind. It was a sense of pride, happiness and gratefulness all in one.
  • The day the man completed his weekend on Sunday – and the smile and firm embrace I would get as a thank you. A man set free – on a course to build his legacy.

The entire mission of MDI is designed to accomplish one major outcome: a Legacy that testifies to the good work we believe in and strive for as an organization.

Where do we go from here? Well, the answer is up. But there are many angles to reach the sky.

As we roll into this Fall, with the four Legacy Discoveries set up and ready, this is a chance for you to think of men in your life. They might never go online and find us. This is the time for the lost art of relationship. Having, or better yet, generating an honest, focused chat with that man, about what you see in them and what’s possible for their lives. If there is a legacy our legacy members could teach the newer ones, it’s how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Hence the land of breakthroughs. As we gear up for September, stay in communication with your men, challenge each other, think of men in your lives and share this amazing gift with the world.

A legacy is only as good as it’s legacy. Burn as bright as you can, be the difference. See you all in the Fall.
